a) State disadvantages of HVDC transmission. b) Give the advantages of high voltage AC transmission. c) Mention limitations of Kelvin’s law. d) Enumerate merits of bundled conductor. e) Define safety factor of insulator and give its significance. f) What is skin effect ? Why is it absent in the dc system? g) Define the terms feeder and distributor. h) What is the importance of intersheath in cables? i) State advantages of placing series capacitors in transmission lines. j) What is meant by surge impedance loading?

2. Compare the volume of conductor material required in dc single phase and three-phase ac system. 3. In a 33 kV overhead line, there are three units in the string of insulators. If the capacitance between each insulator pin and earth is 11% of self-capacitance of each insulator, find : (a) the distribution of voltage over 3 insulators (b) string efficiency. 4. A single phase transmission line has two parallel conductors 3 m apart, the radius of each conductor being 1 cm. Calculate the loop inductance per km length of the line if the material of the conductor is : (a) copper (b) steel with relative permeability of 100. 5. Show how regulation and transmission efficiency are determined for medium lines using nominal T method. Illustrate your answer with suitable vector diagram. 6. Derive an expression for the insulation resistance of a single-core cable.

(a) What is the percentage saving in feeder copper if the line voltage in a 2-wire dc system is raised from 200 volts to 400 volts for the same power transmitted over the same distance and having the same power loss? (b) Show that in a string of suspension insulators, the disc nearest to the conductor has the highest voltage across it. (6,4) 8. (a) Describe the Receiving end circle diagram for long transmission lines based on ABCD constants. (b) Discuss the effect of earth on capacitance of conductors. (6,4) 9. 8. A three phase 5 km long transmission line having resistance of 0.5 , / km and inductance of 1.76 mH/km is delivering power at 0.8 pf lagging. The receiving end voltage is 32 kV. If the supply end voltage is 33 kV, 50 Hz, find line current, regulation and efficiency of the transmission line.
9. A transmission line conductor at a river crossing is supported from two towers at heights of 30 m and 90 m above water level. The horizontal distance between the towers is 270 m. If the tension in the conductor is 1800 kg and the conductor weighs 1.0 kg per meter. Find the clearance between the conductor and the water at a point midway between the towers? Assume parabolic configuration.
